Media and Literacy #2

ABC News and Good Morning America created this message about Munchausen by proxy disease. Which is when a parent (usually a mother) makes up a sickness that their child could have to get attention. This article is about a specific case where the child had unnecessary heart surgery because her mother insisted that she had a heart problem. This article used a lot of quotes that really made the article interesting. It starts out by explaining what Munchausen is, which is a really unrealistic, but real disease and that catches the readers attention. Other people however reading this article could believe that Munchausen disease really exists, but to me it is really far out there. Also, other people who have been effected by this disease could read this article differently with an emotional appeal to the article. This article states that mostly mothers have this disease and describes what it's like for the mothers and the daughters who have it. What the article does not talk about is what it is like for a father to have the disease, or if a son is on the receiving end of the disease. I think this message is being sent for money because will read this and then think they have symptoms of this disease and go to the doctor, and then the doctors will make money and the advertisments will make money from the doctors.
